Two Nearly Identical Bags, Two Very Different Resale Values, Here's Why
People are sometimes surprised when I price two bags that look nearly identical in photos at genuinely different amounts. Same style, same brand, same color even, and still a real gap in price. I want to walk through exactly why that happens, because it's one of the most common questions I get.
Condition is the biggest factor, and I mean real, granular condition, not just a general good or bad rating. Corner wear, handle darkening, interior lining stains, hardware tarnish, these all factor in individually, not as one lump judgment. Two bags can both be described as good condition and still differ meaningfully once you look at the specific wear pattern on each one.
Documentation and provenance matter more than people expect too. A piece with a clear ownership history, original receipt, authentication paperwork, tends to command more confidence, and therefore more value, than an identical piece with no paper trail at all, even when both are genuinely authentic.
Specific colorway and hardware combination matters enormously, more than the base style name. The exact same bag style in a discontinued or limited colorway can be worth significantly more than the same style in a color that's still in regular production, because scarcity is doing real work on the price even though the underlying style is identical.
Completeness is the other factor, whether the original box, dust bag, and any accompanying small parts, straps, locks, extra hardware, are actually present. Missing pieces don't make a bag inauthentic, but they do affect what a buyer is willing to pay, and honestly, what I'm willing to price it at.
Timing plays a role too, which people don't always think about. The exact same bag can be worth more or less depending on current demand cycles, a style that's quietly trending back into relevance commands more than the same piece would have a year earlier or later.
So when two bags look nearly identical in a photo and still carry different price tags, it's almost never arbitrary. It's condition, documentation, colorway rarity, completeness, and timing, all stacking on top of the base style value, and it's exactly the kind of granular evaluation I do on every single piece before it goes up for sale.
