I have an Etro Milano tote in the shop right now, in the house's signature paisley coated canvas with white leather trim, and I think this print deserves more context than most people give it. Etro was founded in Milan in 1968, by Gimmo Etro, originally as a textile company before it became a full fashion house, and paisley wasn't a marketing decision, it was the founder's genuine, personal design obsession.
The paisley motif itself has roots going back centuries, originating in Persian and Kashmiri textile traditions long before any European fashion house touched it, and Etro's specific contribution was treating that pattern with the same seriousness and technical rigor as a fine textile mill, because that's genuinely what the company started as.
