How I Actually Style One Bag for Three Completely Different Occasions
This one used to be a completely different article, a generic guide to throwing a fancy party that had nothing to do with what I actually do. I'd rather use this space to answer something people actually ask me constantly instead, how do you make one good bag work across totally different parts of your life without needing to buy five different ones.
My honest answer is that versatility is one of the most underrated things to look for when you're buying, more than color, more than even the specific brand. I have pieces I genuinely reach for whether I'm dropping into the office for a few hours, meeting a friend for dinner, or heading somewhere that actually calls for dressing up, and it's not because I own a different bag for each of those, it's because I chose pieces that can move between all three.
A structured top handle bag, the kind that can convert to a crossbody, is probably the single most versatile shape I own. In the morning, structured and polished, it reads professional without trying too hard. By evening, drop the strap down or switch it to crossbody, and the exact same bag suddenly reads more relaxed, more going out, without changing a single thing about the item itself. I've talked about this before with a Celine top handle I wear constantly for exactly this reason.
Color matters more than people think too, in the opposite direction from what you'd expect. I actually lean toward black and other neutrals for my most versatile pieces, not because color is boring, but because a neutral piece pulls double duty across more outfits and more occasions than a bold color ever will. I save color and print for pieces I know are going to a specific event, not the ones I need to work across my whole week.
Size is the other piece of this that I think people get wrong constantly. A bag that's too small forces you to either leave things behind or carry a second bag, which defeats the whole purpose of having one versatile piece. A bag that's too large feels like overkill for a quick dinner out. I look for something genuinely mid-sized, enough room for what I actually need day to day, small enough that it doesn't feel like I'm hauling luggage to a casual dinner.
If you're building out your own collection and trying to figure out where to put your money first, my advice is to buy fewer bags, but buy the ones that can actually flex across your real life, not just the ones that look perfect in a single photo. That's a lesson I learned the expensive way, buying piece after piece as a young mom before I understood that one genuinely versatile bag beats three occasion-specific ones every single time.
